Warbirds Over Wanaka was the final airshow for the retiring fleet of No. 40 Squadron C-130H(NZ) Hercules, our personnel celebrating the iconic aircraft with a Formation Thunder flypast.
The current C-130H fleet dates back as far as 1965 and is to be replaced by five new C-130J-30 Super Hercules planes, starting later this year.

RNLAF Hercules gaat opnieuw airdrops humanitaire hulp voor Gaza uitvoeren!

Nederland stuurt opnieuw een C-130 Hercules transportvliegtuig naar het Midden-Oosten. Het toestel wordt daar in april ingezet voor humanitaire steun aan Gaza. Net als eerder deze maand gaat het voedselpakketten droppen. Nederland doet dit samen met Jordanië en andere internationale partners. Dat meldt het kabinet vandaag.
Vanwege de verder verslechterende humanitaire situatie in Gaza stelt Defensie een C-130 en een bijbehorend detachement beschikbaar om de bevolking te voorzien van noodhulp. Het verruimen en versnellen van de toegang tot humanitaire hulp over land is cruciaal om tegemoet te komen aan de benodigde volumes en blijft daarom de prioriteit van het kabinet.
Jordanië coördineert de hele operatie, in afstemming met Israël. De landen die meedoen aan de airdrops zijn naast Nederland en Jordanië ook België, Duitsland, Egypte, Frankrijk, Singapore, de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de Verenigde Staten. De bedoeling is om dagelijks op grotere schaal op diverse plekken voedselpakketten af te werpen.
Risico’s
Recente leveringen van hulpgoederen door andere landen hebben aangetoond dat er risico’s zijn bij het droppen van voedsel via de lucht. Het gaat hier bijvoorbeeld om het opvangen en verdelen van goederen. Het risico op burgerslachtoffers en schade aan gebouwen is klein maar niet uit te sluiten. De humanitaire situatie en wanhoop onder de bevolking verhoogt het risico op ongelukken
Om de risico’s zo klein mogelijk te maken zijn verschillende maatregelen genomen. Zo is het gewicht van de pakketten aangepast. Verder zijn samen met Jordanië de meest geschikte locaties voor drops in kaart gebracht. Ook wordt rekening gehouden met de weersomstandigheden. Als de nauwkeurigheid van de drop niet veilig genoeg kan, wordt deze niet uitgevoerd.

Today, the Excalibur II, an AC-130W Stinger II static display, was unveiled — honoring its dedication as a wartime aircraft.
The AC-130W Stinger II provided support for many operations including Operation NEW DAWN, Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Operation INHERENT RESOLVE, Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL, and Operation ALLIES REFUGE.
Excalibur II has been marked by many significant milestones throughout its operational history. In August of 2021 the Excalibur II flew its final combat mission as American forces departed Kabul, Afghanistan. It is now preserved as a display at The Steadfast Line in recognition of the AC-130W enterprise and the Air Commandos who were part of it.

A 37 Squadron C-130J Hercules and members of 3 Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron (3AMES) flew over parts of northern Australia as part of a recent training initiative.
The visit to north and central-west Queensland aimed to better familiarise crews with northern Australia’s operating environment, and included a visit to Regional Force Surveillance Group in Mount Isa.
Director Regional Airbase Development Team East, Group Captain Stewart Dowrie, highlighted the importance of the initiative as a part of Air Force’s response to the Defence Strategic Review.
“Getting back into our north more often is absolutely key – getting better integrated as a fighting force to help secure our nation, and engaging with the other agencies that live and work here,” Group Captain Dowrie said.
“It is important we maintain and build on the strong connection between the communities in these strategic locations and our ability to project air power across the north.”
During the stop in Mount Isa, members of the C-130J Hercules crew met with members of Army’s Delta Company 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment (D Coy 51 FNQR), using the opportunity to share insights into the region and the important roles both play in the nation’s security.
Officer Commanding D Coy 51 FNQR Major Graham Rorie described the difficulties of working in remote areas and emphasised how critical the integrated force was to working in the challenging conditions.
“The ability to lift and move over vast distances allows us to project even deeper into the most remote regions and engage with the local communities,” Major Rorie said.
The visit was further enhanced by members of 3AMES sharing its processes with Mount Isa-based nurses and doctors from the Royal Flying Doctor’s service.
Nursing officer Flight Lieutenant Danie Bunting explained how participating in this visit allowed 3AMES to seek opportunities to better prepare and modernise aeromedical evacuation capabilities.
“It provided an opportunity for aeromedical evacuation crew members to integrate with C-130J aircrew and improve AE [aeromedical evacuation] processes in order to maximise patient outcomes,” Flight Lieutenant Bunting said.
“The invitation for 3AMES to participate in this initiative enhanced aeromedical evacuation interoperability with 37 Squadron and communities in northern Australia.”
