Challenging mission to the ice Crew on a C-130H (NZ) Hercules have conducted a successful medical evacuation (medevac) from Antarctica, a challenging mission given a rapidly closing window of daylight.
The crew on board the Hercules aircraft successfully completed the medevac of an American patient from the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s McMurdo Station, after receiving a request over the weekend.
There was an NZ Defence Force (NZDF) doctor and medic on board the aircraft when it flew to Antarctica’s Phoenix Airfield on Monday morning, and on arrival into Christchurch that night the patient was taken by ambulance staff to hospital.
The flight has also seen the return of the final 12 NZDF personnel deployed to the ice, completing a busy summer season for those on the NZDF’s Operation Antarctica.
TORY Southern landscapes have been the training grounds for No.40 Squadron during a nine-day air drop exercise aimed at honing skills for the real thing.
A C-130 Hercules was a regular sight in Central Otago and Lake Districts during Exercise Skytrain, which focussed on tactical low-level flying and delivering and picking up loads in scenarios where areas could be under threat.
The flying techniques practised are essential in keeping our aircrews’ flying currency up-to-date, as well as the skills used on deployed operations.
The Hercules and our personnel from Bases Auckland, Ohakea and Woodbourne deployed to Wānaka Airport, alongside personnel from the New Zealand Army.
