The event, attended by past and present members of the Squadron (Sqn) were able to witness the Hercules carry out one of its last spectacular flypasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/index.cfm\/_api\/asset\/image\/?filePath=\/raf-beta\/assets\/Image\/F1ACE79A-89DA-4571-935D5F725D4E405E-BZN-OFFICIAL-20230608-547-03R.jpg\" alt=\"Today, Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, attended the stand down parade of Number 47 Squadron and the retirement of the C-130 Hercules.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hercules will retire from RAF service on 30 June, and concurrently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/our-organisation\/squadrons\/47-squadron\/\">No.47 Squadron<\/a>&nbsp;will be stood down and its Standard laid up for a period at College Hall Officers\u2019 Mess,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/our-organisation\/stations\/raf-college-cranwell\/\">RAF College Cranwell<\/a>, until reformed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/index.cfm\/_api\/asset\/image\/?filePath=\/raf-beta\/assets\/Image\/72353EEA-D27F-498B-A037EE9B958017C2-BZN-OFFICIAL-20230608-547-06R.jpg\" alt=\"Today, Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, attended the stand down parade of Number 47 Squadron and the retirement of the C-130 Hercules.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Number 47 Sqn, Royal Flying Corps, was formed in Beverley, Yorkshire on 1 March 1916. The Squadron was initially designated for home defence, but was not issued with any aircraft until 13 April, when four Royal Aircraft Factory BE2Cs were transferred from 15 Reserve Squadron. During its 107-year history, the Squadron has operated across the globe and has been equipped with a number of different aircraft; in 1968 it became a C-130 Hercules Squadron, based at RAF Fairford, then moving shortly thereafter to RAF Lyneham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/index.cfm\/_api\/asset\/image\/?filePath=\/raf-beta\/assets\/Image\/9D93ACFB-2682-411C-B4F9D5A9F69A2F93-BZN-OFFICIAL-20230608-547-25R.jpg\" alt=\"Today, Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, attended the stand down parade of Number 47 Squadron and the retirement of the C-130 Hercules.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2011 No. 47 Sqn moved from RAF Lyneham to RAF Brize Norton, where it has continued to provide highly trained crews and support staff to support the MOD and by extension the United Kingdom\u2019s requirements in the global theatre.
